The Indecent Proposal That Became a Marriage Proposal
In the prologue of the disturbingly-titled Sold
to the Sheikh by Miranda Lee, Prince Ali of Dubar
is completely obsessed with Charmaine the supermodel...and just a little bit creepy. Almost a year after
getting harshly rejected by the fair beauty, he resurfaces in her life so he can bid five million
dollars during a charity auction to win a dinner date with her.
Their date seems like quite the disaster; throughout the evening Charmaine lets her hostility
fly. But Ali is
nonplussed and makes her an
offer she chooses not to refuse: "I will donate five hundred million dollars to your precious
foundation...if you spend a week with me."
It's sort of like the premise of the movie Pretty
Woman, except that Charmaine isn't a hooker, and the Julia Roberts character didn't run
a foundation for cancer-stricken children.
As for Ali, he is a pretty scary guy. It's fairly troubling when he contemplates the
previous year, noting that "no other woman or other activity had been
able to drive this creature from his thoughts." He even remarks to himself that if fate had not
put the charity auction in his path, he probably would have resorted to kidnapping Charmaine. (Fortunately,
this is only romantic in sheikh novels.)
But instead of opting for a restraining order, Charmaine bravely agrees to spend the week bedding
the intense prince. Unsurprisingly, it doesn't take long for their red-hot passion to
turn into true love and...later, a happy, healthy marriage. And fortunately for Charmaine, Ali
becomes far less scary during the book's epilogue.
